5 signs you might have IBS — and when to see a GI provider
Did you know that roughly 10% to 15% of adults in the United States have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)? Yet only about half know it. Unfortunately, ongoing IBS symptoms can significantly impact a person’s quality of life — causing them to miss out on opportunities, including social events, work, and more.
There are common signs and symptoms that indicate you might have IBS. But it’s important to know that IBS almost never follows a regular routine or pattern — in other words, some IBS symptoms occur regularly, others come and go, and still others only happen during a flare-up.
Here are 5 signs you might have IBS:
- Experiencing diarrhea, constipation—or a combination of both: A fact about IBS—and a frustrating one at that—is that it’s unpredictable. For instance, some people experience more issues with diarrhea, others with constipation, but still others experience both.
- Feeling gassy and/or bloated: If this happens often, particularly after meals, IBS could be the cause.
- Abdominal cramping or abdominal pain: Especially if these problems get better after you poop, it might mean you are dealing with IBS.
- Stress-induced GI symptoms: If you have a “nervous” stomach or you notice your symptoms worsen with stress, you may have IBS.
- Mucus in your stool: If you observe mucus in your poop, particularly if it is loose, it could be related to IBS.
Our advice? You don’t have to live like this! If you’re dealing with IBS symptoms, make an appointment with a GI provider, who can help you get started on treatment and find relief.
